Written for the Poppy Scotland concert tour, this song sums up what the Poppy means but more importantly, the work done by Poppy Scotland, Legion Scotland and the British Legion in support of veterans.

The bridge has one of my favourite lines;
“Love is more powerful than hatred, and peace has more glory than war”
It is a tragedy of our time that we seem to have forgotten that lesson.

V1
A colourful canvas of nature
Shrouded in soft shades of green
Was churned into brown muddy wasteland
By the power of war’s mighty machines
But the spring brought a new germination
And they sprouted and danced in the breeze
From a landscape of pure desolation
Grew a symbol of freedom and peace
Chorus
Oh Roses are pretty and Violets are too
They bloom in the springtime and all summer through
But the flower that keeps giving as summer subsides
Is the Bonnie red poppy, you’re wearing with pride
V2
Don’t think of the Poppy in sadness
It’s a happy flower, bursting with life
It can fill empty hearts with some gladness
Through the madness of everyday strife
Yes, a poppy’s a mark of remembrance
But it’s more than respect for the past
It brings hope for the present and future
Let’s make the legacy last
Bridge
May the world make togetherness sacred
Put aside where you’re from, who you are
For love is more powerful than hatred
And peace has more glory than war
Chorus
Oh Roses are pretty and Violets are too
They bloom in the springtime and all summer through
But the flower that keeps giving as summer subsides
Is the Bonnie red poppy, you’re wearing with pride
